Oaxaca, Mexico
Oaxaca (wa-HAW-ka) is both a state and that state’s capital city. Oaxaca the state covers the southern portion of the Isthmus of Tehauntepec and boasts a culture and landscape unlike any in Mexico. Along with its rich cuisine, it has an impressive, ruddy history, many unique indigenous cultures and a landscape that varies from virgin beaches to remote mountain valleys.
Authentic colonial homes line streets in the center of Oaxaca and many apartments are now available. Prices range from US$75,000 to $300,000, depending on the location and current condition. Prices become more affordable in the zones further away from center, with the exception of some more exclusive housing developments. Oaxaca does offer a full range of housing options so a more thorough search here may be more richly rewarded than in some smaller areas. The coast offers oceanfront condominiums beginning at US$90,000 but more spacious options are certainly worth inquiring about.
