Guaymas, Mexico
Guaymas is a fishing town and giant shrimp are a local specialty. A port city of about 100,000 people, it is one of the largest cities on Mexico’s Pacific coast. A relatively new town, Guaymas was first settled just as the Spanish Empire was ending. Unlike so much of Mexico, there are few remnants of the colonial era here. More a working, Mexican city than a tourist town, Guaymas sits on the Gulf of California between the Sonora and Baja California deserts. That said, Guaymas and nearby San Carlos are the principal tourist destinations in the state of Sonora. A terrific place for those who love both the desert and the sea, Guaymas is within easy reach of the Sonoran desert, and is just a ferry ride away from the deserts and beaches of Baja California Norte.
Homes in Guaymas tend to be big by Mexican standards and constructed in the last 20 years, so buyers can get a lot of bang for relatively little buck. Freestanding one- or two-bedroom homes start at around US$125,000, but as bedrooms are required move up only into the range US$350,000 to $550,000 for five- and even six-bedroom units. Condominiums are increasingly becoming an option, and these start at about US$185,000 for a one-bedroom facing the sea. Because the area has only been under serious development for a short time, residential lots are available for as little US$30,000 to $45,000. Of course, homes and lots closer to the sea will increase in value and price, but a wealth of interesting bargains do move onto the market from time to time.
