Guadalajara, Mexico
Guadalajara is a magnificent southwestern colonial city, in the highlands of the state of Jalisco. Like Mexico City, at 5000 feet (1800 meters), Guadalajara’s high altitude should be approached with caution by heart or asthma patients. With a mammoth population of 4,000,000 people, Guadalajara is remarkably well managed, clean and efficient. An industrial giant, the city retains great character, and many of the city’s public spaces offer oases of pleasant, leafy calm, rather than the frantic clamor that one associates with life in comparably big cities.
Guadalajara, being such a big city, has a tremendous variety of available homes. Two- to three-bedroom homes can be purchased starting at between US$75,000 and $100,000. Homes in more exclusive areas, can be had for US$200-400,000. Mansions, of course, command higher prices, but still seem a bargain at US$800,000-2,000,000 and up. Two and three-bedroom condominiums may also be found, ranging in price from US$100,000-350,000.
