Cozumel, Mexico

Cozumel is an island in the Caribbean Sea off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula near Cancun in the southwest of Mexico. A tropical diver’s paradise, Cozumel boasts of the world’s second-largest coral reef along its shores.

Although it is one of the most-frequented cruise ship destinations in Mexico, Cozumel offers an unspoiled abundance of relaxing, exquisite beaches. As it is under-developed compared to many of Mexico’s bigger cities and tourist centers, Cozumel presents visitors with an almost striking immersion in natural beauty and calm. An island of a few dozen miles in length, Cozumel has little commotion, but maintains a small town feeling. Its economy is based mostly on the traffic from one-day cruise ship stops and on its spectacular diving. Cozumel is known to every professional diver as one of the top dive sites in the world.

With just over 90,000 people, most living in the principal city of San Miguel de Cozumel, one can always feel free of the crowds in Cozumel’s tropical jungles or on its expansive beaches. 95% of Cozumel’s territory is either tropical jungle or rancho (farm) land. The island is made up of ancient coral deposits; those reefs still growing on the southeast side of the island have justly been named a national park. Of course, visitors and residents alike can always enjoy an abundance of gorgeous and sparsely populated beaches, truly the envy of Mexico. The jungles that blanket much of the island offer the opportunity to travel back in time to the age of the Mayans or to explore the superb natural diversity of the Caribbean.
